Bovis Homes is an old British property developer headquartered in Kings Hill, England. It has now become part of the Vistry Group. The company's home design combines tradition and innovation to create gorgeous homes with modern living standards.
The company was founded as a general builder in 1885 by Charles William Bovis, then 35 years old. One of the first projects of the company is a four-story brick residential building, created in 1893. It can still be seen in York Street, Marylebone. During the turbulent 1920s, Bovis was one of the few publicly traded construction companies. The home builder has acquired a large retail clientele such as the well-known brand Marks & Spencer.
In 1936, three years before World War II, the Bovis School of Building was opened. It was attended by 100 students in the speciality and interns in management. This is how the story of supporting and training company employees began. During World War II, Bovis built an ammunition plant at Swinnerton and operated on the Mulberry port modules. After the end of the hostilities, the company resumed operations for house developments.
In 1965, Bovis Homes was formed as a separate business specializing in the private housing market, and the firm began to expand rapidly. Bovis Homes became the second-largest construction company in the UK in 1972. And in 1973, the company built 2,659 new developments. Thereafter, in 1974 Bovis Homes became part of the P&O Group.
In 1985, the company also became an international contractor under the Bovis Construction brand, and in 1986 also founded Bovis Homes Retirement Living. In 1996, the developer acquired the West Country house builder Britannia Homes.
In 1997, the housebuilder Bovis Homes was listed on the London Stock Exchange and became Bovis Homes Group PLC. And as a result of flotation, the company severed ties with Bovis Construction. At the same time, P&O retained operations in Florida and Germany. In 2007, the company acquired Elite Homes in the north of England.
In 2017, Greg Fitzgerald became the new CEO. In 2018, the company's headquarters moved to Kings Hill, Kent. About 120 employees are also moving there.
In 2020, the acquisition of Galliford Try PLC Linden Homes resulted in creating the Vistry Group, of which Bovis Homes is part today.
The developer boasts a diverse portfolio of properties ranging from apartments and new build homes to 5- and 6-bedroom family homes. The company offers schemes from small developments, numbering about 100 houses, as well as large-scale projects with thousands of property developments and all the necessary infrastructure. Bovis Homes also works closely with a wide range of housing associations, councils and public sector agencies to provide affordable, quality homes in the best locations.
