David Wilson Homes

David Wilson Homes, founded in 1961, was formerly a British homebuilding company. The developer's headquarters were located in Coleville in central England. The company is now part of Barratt Developments.

History of David Wilson Homes

The company was founded in 1961 by David Wilson. Before that, he joined his father's carpentry workshop in 1960, and during that decade, he gradually moved the business to residential construction. The company was initially called AH Wilson. It built about 150 house developments in the Leicestershire area. A joint real estate investment with First National Finance Corporation, Bowden Park Holdings, was fully acquired in 1973 when First National faced financial difficulties.

In the 1980s, David Wilson Homes expanded significantly. Sales rose from 300 to 1,600 new developments and profits increased from £2 million to £40 million. As a result of its conservative land buying policy, Wilson Bowden weathered the recession of the early 1990s better than most of its competitors. Soon, the developer opened new offices in the West Midlands, Hereford, Hertfordshire and Kent (1992), Leeds (1993 (Cheshire (1997) and Glasgow (1999)). Also, a series of strategic acquisitions: Berkshire firm of Trencherwood in 1996 and the old Henry Boot plc business in 2003. By that time, the developer had already provided more than 4,000 property developments a year, and the company was considered one of the most successful of its kind.

The founder of the company, David Wilson, ran the business for forty years. However, in April 2007, shortly before the next housing recession, the company was sold to Barratt Developments for £2.2 billion.

Developer's Divisions

Previously, the company consisted of three main divisions, each of which had its own separate direction:

• David Wilson Homes built homes throughout most of England, Scotland and Wales.
• Wilson City Homes specialized in creating urban new build homes.
• Wilson Bowden Developments Limited was primarily involved in retail, leisure, industrial and office development projects.
