About the developer Redrow PLC

Redrow PLC is a British home builder, one of the largest in the country. Its network consists of 14 operating units throughout the UK. The main office is located in Flintshire and employs approximately 2,300 people.

History of Redrow PLC

The founder of the company, Steve Morgan, worked as an agent for a construction company at Wellington Civil Engineering early in his career. But in 1974, the parent company decided to close it down. So Morgan offered to take over the contract, borrowed £5,000 from his father and fulfilled the contract at a profit.

When he was only 21 years old, he founded a new housebuilder, Redrow. The developer gradually expanded thanks to minor construction work. Steve Morgan also formed a new construction company with Simon Macbryde, with which Redrow later merged. The developer has moved from its base in Wales to Cheshire. Later in the 1980s, the company acquired construction firms in Manchester and Wirral.

The total entry of the developer into residential construction took place in 1982, having grown significantly by 1985 and separated from the construction business. A small acquisition in Kent allowed the start of residential construction in the southeast of Great Britain. In 1986, a subsidiary company was established in the Midlands. In 1987, the developer bought Whelmar Lancashire, one of five housing subsidiaries sold by Christian Salvesen. By this time, the housebuilder was already delivering over 1000 house developments a year.

Redrow continued to expand, including southwest, south Wales and Yorkshire. In doing so, the company withdrew from the vulnerable southeastern market before the property collapse there in 1989. Then the developer returned there in 1993 and bought Costain Homes, which increased sales to 2,000 property developments a year.

Over time, Redrow developed into a purely real estate development business, so the company was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1994. The developer continued to grow, reaching 3,000 home sales a year. In 2000, Steve Morgan announced that he was leaving the company, retaining only 14% of the shares. In the meantime, Paul Pedley, a former CFO, took over as managing director. Later in 2009, Morgan returned to the company as executive chairman with a 30% stake. The developer launched the Heritage Home Collection in 2010, followed by the Regent Collection and the Abode Collection.

In February 2017, Redrow acquired Radleigh Homes in Derby, which built 200 new developments in 2016, and renamed it Redrow Homes. In September 2017, Steve Morgan was set to return as non-executive chairman.

As of October 18, 2018, Redrow boasted their 100,000th customer. The company also released data on jobs created, including 2,000 interns and 200,000 indirect employees. On November 7, 2018, it became known that Steve Morgan will leave the company in March 2019, when John Tutte takes over as executive chairman, and Matthew Pratt becomes a chief operating officer. John Tutte then announced that he would be retiring in 2020. In the meantime, Matthew Pratt became the group's CEO. In September 2021, Richard Akers became the new non-executive chairman.
